Figure 01
General-purpose autonomous humanoid robot for workforce
$150,000
Figure 01 is Figure AI's proof-of-concept humanoid robot that pioneered real-world general-purpose humanoid deployment, debuting in 2023. Built by Figure AI — a San Jose startup founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock, now valued at $39 billion — the Figure 01 stands 5'6" (168 cm), weighs 132 lbs (60 kg), carries 44 lbs (20 kg), and runs approximately 5 hours per charge. It was the first humanoid robot to demonstrate real-time conversational AI-powered task reasoning via OpenAI's vision-language models, and was commercially deployed at BMW's Spartanburg manufacturing plant. The Figure 01 has since been retired and superseded by the Figure 02.
Released: 2023

Figure 01: The Breakthrough That Launched Figure AI
Figure AI was founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock. A viral March 2024 video showed Figure 01 conversing naturally with a human, identifying objects on a table, reasoning about what was edible, and executing multi-step tasks — all powered by OpenAI's vision-language model in real time. Figure AI secured a $675M Series B at a $2.6B valuation from Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI Startup Fund, Jeff Bezos, and Intel Capital in February 2024. Figure 02 launched in August 2024 with 16-DOF hands and onboard compute. In 2025, Figure AI ended the OpenAI collaboration and developed proprietary Helix VLA AI. The September 2025 Series C raised $1 billion at a $39B valuation. The Figure 01 is now fully retired.
Key Capabilities and Design Features
- 40+ degrees of freedom (full body)
- Dexterous multi-fingered hands with individual finger control and force sensing
- Custom electric actuators at every joint — fully electric, no hydraulics
- OpenAI VLA vision-language-action AI (original); superseded by proprietary Helix
- Real-time conversational AI: understood speech, described visual environment, planned multi-step tasks
- Task learning from observation: watched a human make coffee once, then replicated autonomously
- Human-proportioned frame works at standard workstations, doorways, and aisles
- 5-hour battery life
- 20 kg (44 lb) payload
OpenAI Integration and Helix AI Architecture
What separated Figure 01 from every other humanoid in 2024 was its AI. Figure AI partnered with OpenAI to integrate advanced vision-language models directly into the decision-making pipeline — processing camera feeds and audio in real time, generating plans, and controlling the robot's body to execute them. In 2025, Figure AI ended the OpenAI collaboration and developed proprietary Helix VLA. Helix runs on dual onboard GPUs: System 2 handles high-level planning at 7–9 Hz and System 1 provides low-level motor control at 200 Hz.
BMW Deployment and Commercial Use Cases
In January 2024, Figure AI announced a commercial agreement with BMW to deploy Figure 01 at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. Figure 01 performed sheet metal insertion, material transport, and quality inspection support. Its successor Figure 02 later achieved a 400% efficiency gain on the same BMW tasks. BotQ, Figure AI's dedicated manufacturing facility, is designed to produce 12,000 humanoid robots per year, with plans to use Figure robots to help build more Figure robots.
