For classrooms the kit matters less than the lesson plans behind it. LEGO retired SPIKE Prime in June 2026; its Computer Science & AI Kit successor ships with standards-aligned units at $529.95 for four students.

University teaching: buy the ecosystem

Teaching robotics means teaching ROS. TurtleBot 4 exists for exactly this: the reference platform maintained with Open Robotics, running ROS 2 out of the box on hardware a lab can afford in multiples.

Research labs: buy programmability and support

A research platform lives or dies on SDK access and vendor stability. Check who owns the company, what the EDU tier actually unlocks, and whether the platform has a publication trail before committing a grant.

A research arm for about $120

Hugging Face's LeRobot library and The Robot Studio's SO-101 arm redefined the budget end: a printable, Apache-licensed follower arm with a bill of materials around $122, or $230 for a leader-follower pair that teaches real imitation learning.[HF1][TRS1]

LEGO Education's Computer Science & AI Kit is the successor to SPIKE Prime, which retired from sale on 30 June 2026 with app support promised until 2031. FIRST LEGO League teams can keep using SPIKE hardware through the 2027-28 season.[LE2][LE1]

The humanoid entry point

$13,500 for a research humanoid

Unitree's G1 lists at $13,500, but the base unit does not support secondary development; research groups need the quote-only G1 EDU tier for SDK access and the longer 18-month warranty.[UT5]

ROS is the research substrate

Open Robotics counted 984 million ROS package downloads in 2025, up 85% year over year, with ROS 2 at 91.2% of all downloads and 34,614 packages available. A platform without first-class ROS 2 support fights the ecosystem.[ROS1]

NAO has contributed to more than 3,600 scientific publications and has been RoboCup's standard platform for over 15 years, with 55 teams and 200+ robots at each competition. That trail is what a grant reviewer can check.[MX1][MX4]

Imitation learning got cheap

LeRobot ships ACT and Diffusion policies, reinforcement learning and vision-language-action models against sub-$250 hardware, with 26,000+ GitHub stars and an ICLR 2026 paper. Labs can now teach modern robot learning without a capital request.[HF1][TRS1]

What is the best robot for teaching robotics?
Match the platform to the buyer job. Schools get furthest with curriculum-first kits like LEGO Education's Computer Science & AI line. University courses teaching ROS default to TurtleBot 4, the reference platform maintained with Open Robotics. Research labs choose by SDK access and publication trail: NAO for human-robot interaction, a Go2 EDU for legged research, or a Franka Research 3 for manipulation.[LE2][CP1][MX4][UT3][FR1]
How much do educational robots cost?
The verified range in 2026 runs from about $122 for an open-source SO-101 arm and $529.95 for LEGO's four-student classroom kit, through $1,600 to $4,500 for consumer Unitree Go2 variants and TurtleBot 4's $1,195 to $1,850 launch pricing, up to $13,500 for a Unitree G1 humanoid. Is NAO still available after Aldebaran's collapse?
Yes. Maxvision acquired Aldebaran's technology and IP in July 2025 and established Maxtronics in France to develop, sell and support NAO, with a NAO7 generation in development. The install base stands at more than 20,000 units worldwide, so the platform's education ecosystem survived the corporate failure.[MXV1][MX1]
What happened to LEGO SPIKE Prime?
LEGO Education retired SPIKE Prime, SPIKE Essential and their hubs from sale on 30 June 2026. The SPIKE App keeps receiving bug fixes until 30 June 2031, spare parts are stocked for two years of warranty support, and FIRST LEGO League allows SPIKE hardware through the 2027-28 season. New purchases should go to the Computer Science & AI Kit line.[LE1][LE2]

The stack, not a single robot: ROS 2 as the substrate (91.2% of nearly a billion annual ROS downloads), TurtleBot-class platforms for mobile robotics, Franka arms for manipulation with 1 kHz real-time control, quadrupeds like the Go2 EDU for locomotion, and increasingly LeRobot with sub-$250 arms for imitation-learning research.[ROS1][CP1][FR1][UT3][HF1]
